Each class has a preferred weapon. You can view each class' description in the Library to see their preferred weapon type, but you still won't know what other things they can equip. I made it like this to encourage equipping preferred weapons. I don't like seeing everyone with the same equip. Equipping preferred weapons allows you to do 25% more damage. This should help you figure out what to equip. Here is a list of the classes and the weapon types they can equip. The preferred type will be at the top of the list.

Keep in mind, holy based classes cannot equip anything dark based and vise versa. Even if it is one the weapon types listed above.

As for other equipment, it just depends on the item.

For armor just remember classes like Warriors, Knights, etc will usually equip armors, mails, tunics, etc, while classes like Mages, Summoners, Angels, witches etc will equip things like cloaks, robes, capes, etc. However some class can equip both types (magic and physical based).

Shields - Warriors, Knights etc equip shields; Mages, summoners, witches, etc equip targes. However some classes such as theives can equip both shields and targes.

Headgear - Most headgear can be worn by all classes (ie headbands, bandannas), but some large helms can only be worn by warrior and knight type classes.

All accessories can be worn by all classes except the dark and light based ones cannot be equipped by light and dark based classes respectively.

Hope that clears it up...

More On Preferred Weapons

Equipping a Sword on a Warrior/Dragon Warrior, Axe on a Barbarian, Katana on a Samurai, Dark Sword on a Vampire, or Polearm on a Demon without a shield will give them a chance of critical hit and cause 50% more damage. Without a shield, it is like they are holding their weapon in both hands.
Equipping mage type classes with their preferred Rod/Staff/Doll will multiply their attack damage by a fraction of their magic level (square root). This makes it like they are adding a little magic power to their attacks.
Equipping guns on Gunners gives them a small chance of getting a "head shot" and causing 50% more damage. However, guns also have a small chance of missing regardless of who equips them.
Arrows have the same attributes as guns (described above), only with Scouts and Hunter/Huntresses.
Monks' attack and mo will be increased based on level if they battle bare handed (Left and Right Hand slots empty.)

"Other" Weapons
Aside from the preferred weapon types, there are also some weapons that are in the "Other" category. These include Whips, Boomerangs, and Gunblades, among others.

These weapons are not preferred by any class so they will not get a damage bonus no matter what class they are equipped on. However, this doesn't mean you should never use them because they all have special abilities. For example, Whips and Boomerangs have the "Multi-Hit" ability which means your attack will damage ALL enemies in 3 on 3 bot battles. Also, all Gublades have a chance of critical hit because they can cause extra damage if the trigger is pulled at the right time (there is no actual way to pull the trigger, it's random). UPDATE: Gunblades have now been set as the new Pirate class' preferred weapon and are no longer in the "Other" category.

There are also other "Other" type weapons that I did not mention above so you'll have to discover them and their effects on your own.
